On the Tide-Oath Platform of the Salt King’s Court, the younger brother is falsely accused of deicide. Nereya slices open his palm before the assembly and takes out the Tide Core, claiming the death penalty for herself. Once Commander of the Tide Spear Guards, she is now a prisoner. The brother she protects is the sole survivor of the Breath of the Sea experimental pool. Tarsis, a fighting slave, testifies in court. Phorkys, the High Priest of the Temple, commits assassination with Tide Spikes and refines the Breath of the Sea from children. Nereya breaks out of prison, seizes a prisoner ship, ventures into the Black Salt Abyss, and leads the mixed-bloods across the Three Tides. At the Seven-Tide Council, she severs patriarchal rule. As the royal city sinks beneath the waves, she guides all its people to retreat to the high plateaus. In the end, she storms the Temple alone and uncovers the truth: the first Sea King was a woman. Together, the people push the Tide Wall back. The Salt Throne is never rebuilt. She becomes the first Queen of the Seas—bowing to no god, no bloodline, only to the choices of the living.
